Germany: Cyber Crime At All-Time High
Today's ’’ Der Spiegel’’, one of Germany's
biggest newspapers, highlights that cyber crime is now at an all time high in
Germany. Further, it had the highest rate of growth: 12 percent.
The fact that cybercrime is growing faster than
traditional crime should not surprise anyone. Cybercrime is a global, not just
German, problem. Hackers can attack Germans from Frankfurt just as easily
as they can from Rio, Beijing or Nigeria. And data theft is the goal.
Our investigations into hacker forums indicates that the bulk—a third—of
discussions center on data theft, double the next topic (password cracking,
BTW). Germany should prepare for a future where cyber crime will be more
common than physical crime.
Another lesson for American legislators
currently considering privacy laws: Germany has the most strict data
privacy requirements on the planet. Hackers, not surprisngly, aren't
abiding by the law. My views were detailed in the past.
